april 12 2008
There are two weeks left before my second auction.  I've recruited three different artists that will give me artwork to auction.  I was actually thinking that I'd have more artists by now interested in selling their art.  There seems to be a hesitation in most of the artists I've known for a long time to submit their work for the auction.  I'm not sure what is causing this hesitation.  At first I thought it was because my company is new and that they wanted to see if I could pull it off, whether it would be a success or not.  I admit that in terms of sales the company is still new and the sales for the first auction were somewhat nominal.  Still the day of the auction was influenced by the blizzard we had that day.  But apart from the sales I do think the energy and intentions of the auction was positive.
There is another reason at work preventing the artists from put their work for sale by auction.  At first I suspected that it might be a feeling of insecurity every artist has when they put their work on display and especially when it involves having someone spending money to own the piece.  Of course not everyone will sale a piece and that may be taken as a sign of rejection by some.  This is an issue for most artists and it's a personal reflection that touches their sense of worth.  It is difficult to separate oneself from the art one creates.  It comes from their spirit and so they inevitably are attached to their creations.  And if they aren't sold it is taken as a rejection of them as a person--as an artists.  It tells us that we must compartmentalize our lives.  That once the work has been created it enters the public realm and that it no longer must be taken as a personal reflection on the artist.
